Whales around Palmer Station, Antarctica

An Orca poking its head through the ice (earlier in the season). We saw several Humpback whales Sunday, our one dayoff from work each week. 4 of us went out in a small boat (a "Zodiac" inflatable boat) to see the local sights, and we lucked out! There were several Humpback whales in the area, then we went to Torgersen Island where there is a penguin study site that studies effects of humans on the animals, so it is okay to visit one half of the island, and the other half is off limits. The island is probably the size of a couple city blocks. There was one "Chinstrap" penguin, and you can tell from the pictures which one that is. All the others were Adelie penguins, the most common in this area. By the way it really sunk out there, like a diaper pail that hadn't been emptied in a few hundred years.
